Samsung announced that the Samsung Mondi, a Mobile WiMAX-enable handset, will become available for purchase in the USA starting August 1, 2009. The handset has been designed to work with Clearwire’s Clear Mobile WiMAX service.

The new handset can offer download speeds that double the speeds currently offered on 3G networks. The phone will also have WiFi connectivity.

The Samsung Mondi will come with a full QWERTY keyboard, video content and business applications, multimedia capabilities and support for a wide range of services, including Fring, Gypsii and Windows Live Messenger. Additionally, the handset comes with a GPS receiver, a 4.3 inch touchscreen display, 3 megapixel camera, Opera 9.5 pre-loaded, and runs Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, writes Softpedia.

“The Mondi is a perfect example of the powerful and stylish innovation that Samsung is bringing to the U.S. mobile market,” said Omar Khan, senior vice president of Strategy and Product Management for Samsung Mobile. “The Mondi packs productivity tools, entertainment options and content management applications into a compact device that is flexible and intuitive.”

As mentioned above, the Samsung Mondi will be available for purchase in select Best Buy stores located in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland. The phone bears the price tag of $449 with no contract or $349 with a 2 year service agreement with Clearwire.
