Automatic Updates is one of the many hidden new features in iOS 12. When enabled, your iPhone or iPad will automatically update to the latest OS overnight, when your device is idle, charging, and connected to Wi-Fi. If you’re the kind of person who always wants to be on the latest version of iOS and get access to the new features as quickly as possible, you will love this new feature. But for most of us, iOS software updates are not something we’d like to automate.

How to Enable or Disable Automatic Updates Feature in iOS 12

When it comes to software updates, it’s good to have control over the process. Bugs in new iOS updates are common. You might want to wait a week after major releases to hit that update button.

Prior to iOS 12, Apple had a halfway feature for automatic updates. Users would get a notification asking if they’d like the update to be installed overnight. But in iOS 12, Apple has removed the manual step altogether.

Thankfully, the new Automatic Updates feature isn’t enabled by default. But if you’ve enabled it previously just to try it out and now you’ve changed your mind, follow the steps below to disable automatic updates.

Step 1: Open the Settings app.

Step 2: Tap on General.

Step 3: Select Software Updates.

Step 4: Tap on Automatic Updates.

Step 5: From this screen, tap on the toggle next to Automatic Updates to disable the feature.

If you want to enable the feature, use the same steps as mentioned above.
